It matures to an average height of 6 feet to 8 feet and an average width of 6 feet to 8 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides full sun and grows best when planted in loam, clay or silt soil that is well drained. In the fall Glen St. Mary Elaeagnus produces white flowers. The foliage is grey / silver and medium green in color. It attracts visual attention and is resistant to deer, drought, insects, diseases, mildew and heat. If you like fragrance, Elaeagnus Pungens 'Glen St. Mary' has fragrant flowers.
Glen St. Mary Elaeagnus can be useful in the landscape in mass plantings, as a buffer or screen, as a background, in shrub borders, around decks, swimming pools, and other outdoor living areas, in landscape beds or islands, in small groupings, as a hedge, as a tree form shrub or in medians and also in theme gardens.
Noteworthy Characteristics
Glen St. Mary is a much smaller, compact form of Elaeagnus. Most noted for it's unique silvery-gray to dark green foliage color, Glen St. Mary as well displays small, creamy white bell shaped flowers that are strongly fragrant. The flowers appear in fall and are follwed by silvery-red oval berry-like drupes. Elaeagnus provides year round interest and visual enjoyment.
Uses
Excellent for use as a single specimen, in groupings, flowering shrub borders, shrub borders, natural hedge, clipped formal hedge, visual screen or wind and noise buffer, mass plantings, home foundation plantings, erosion control on slopes and embankments, espalier (grown flat against a wall), butterfly gardens, wildlife gardens, asian theme gardens, cottage gardens, or just about anywhere in the garden that gets lots of sun.
Culture & Care Tips
Grows best in full sun. Prefers average, well drained soil. Watch out for the thorns when pruning. Unlike larger growing Elaeagnus, Glen St Mary has smaller and fewer thorns.
