Noteworthy Characteristics
A North American native, Hummingbird Summersweet is an exceptionally hardy and easy-to-grow shrub that bears creamy white, deliciously spicy clove-scented flowers in dense, upright spikes that last up to six weeks during the hottest part of summer. This variety is more compact than the species, growing 2-3 feet in height with an equal spread . Flowers mature to spikes of dark brown capsules that provide winter interest. Its oval, glossy dark green leaves turn a pleasant yellow in fall. The flowers are a favorite of hummingbirds, butterflies and other beneficial insects.
Uses
Hummingbird Summersweet is the perfect flowering shrub for moist areas in the landscape. The fragrance is similar to lilacs so make sure to plant it near patios, porches and other outdoor living areas. Great for hummingbord gardens!
Culture & Care Tips
Thrives in consistently moist but well-drained soil in full sun to partial or dappled shade but is highly adaptable to other conditions. More floriferous than the species, it provides good bloom in shady locations. In winter, remove some of the oldest wood from the base; the stronger new growth will replace it in spring.
