Chamaecyparis Obtusa 'Gold Tip' is a slow growing tree and cone bearing plant that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 5A through 9B. It matures to an average height of 6 feet to 8 feet and an average width of 3 feet to 4 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides full sun, morning sun with afternoon shade or morning shade with afternoon sun and grows best when planted in loam or silt soil that is well drained. The foliage is yellow and dark green in color. It attracts visual attention and is resistant to deer, drought, insects, diseases, mildew and heat.
Gold Tip Fernspray Cypress can be useful in the landscape in foundation plantings, as an accent, as a focal point, in landscape beds or islands, to frame the corners of a home or other building or to add property value and also in rock or xeriscape gardens or theme gardens.
Noteworthy Characteristics
Very suitable for smaller landscapes, this eye-catching small tree has graceful, arching branches of golden, feathery fern-like foliage. The bright golden-yellow foliage may turn to an orange hue in winter. Grows slowly up to 6-8' tall and 3-4' wide.
Uses
Accent, Containers, Foundation Plantings. Japanese Gardens, Single Specimen, Small Groups
Culture
Prefers well-drained soil and heavily mulched roots to keep moist and cool. While plenty of sun will produce the brightest gold color, avoid planting in direct full sun as foliage can burn. Hardy in Zones 4 to 8
