Noteworthy Characteristics

There's a lot of different and conflicting information out there about the Gyokuryu Cryptomeria. The controversy involves spelling, size, shape, and USDA Zones. Gardener Direct has searched far and wide in an attempt to get the accurate information. We feel that we are as close as anyone can get. Gyokuryu has a low nesting growth habit but some plants will at times send out vertical shoots that grow much faster. Growers that take cuttings from these vertical shoots end up with larger growing plants, and the growers that take cuttings from the lower horizontal growth end up with the compact form. The compact form is very slow growing and usually, over many years, will only reach up to a height of 2 feet, or so. The others that grow larger will reach 10-15 feet in height. All of this said, both are very attractive and unique in many aspects. The uniquely textured foliage is bright green when young maturing to a medium green. During the cool season the foliage takes on copper-bronze cast.

Single specimen, groupings, shrub borders, natural hedge, clipped formal hedge, home foundation plantings, container gardens, butterfly gardens, asian theme gardens, or just about anywhere in the garden where it's unique texture and shape will be noticed.
