Cryptomeria Japonica 'Gyokuyru Cryptomeria' is a slow growing shrub that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 6A through 9A. It matures to an average height of 2 feet to 4 feet and an average width of 3 feet to 4 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. The foliage is medium green in color. It attracts visual attention and is resistant to deer, drought, insects, diseases, mildew and heat.
Gyokuyra Cryptomeria can be useful in the landscape in foundation plantings, in containers or planters, in shrub borders, around decks, swimming pools, and other outdoor living areas, in landscape beds or islands, to accentuate entryways, in small groupings or in medians and also in theme gardens.
Noteworthy Characteristics
There's a lot of different and conflicting information out there about the Gyokuryu Cryptomeria. The controversy involves spelling, size, shape, and USDA Zones. Gardener Direct has searched far and wide in an attempt to get the accurate information. We feel that we are as close as anyone can get. Gyokuryu has a low nesting growth habit but some plants will at times send out vertical shoots that grow much faster. Growers that take cuttings from these vertical shoots end up with larger growing plants, and the growers that take cuttings from the lower horizontal growth end up with the compact form. The compact form is very slow growing and usually, over many years, will only reach up to a height of 2 feet, or so. The others that grow larger will reach 10-15 feet in height. All of this said, both are very attractive and unique in many aspects. The uniquely textured foliage is bright green when young maturing to a medium green. During the cool season the foliage takes on copper-bronze cast.
Uses
Single specimen, groupings, shrub borders, natural hedge, clipped formal hedge, home foundation plantings, container gardens, butterfly gardens, asian theme gardens, or just about anywhere in the garden where it's unique texture and shape will be noticed.
Culture & Care Tips
Easy to grow in well-drained soils and very low maintenance - never needs pruning. Prefers full sun, but will tolerate afternoon or morning shade. Very drought tolerant when established.
