Additional Information About Silverine Hen and Chicks

Silverine Hens And Chicks is a moderate growing groundcover plant, perennial plant and succulent plant that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 5A through 9B. It matures to an average height of 1 inch to 1 foot and an average width of 6 inches to 1 foot, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides full sun and grows best when planted in sand, loam, clay or silt soil that is well drained. In the summer Silverine Hens And Chicks produces rose pink flowers. The foliage is blue green and burgundy in color. It attracts visual attention and is resistant to deer, drought, insects, diseases, mildew and heat.

Silverine Hens And Chicks can be useful in the landscape in mass plantings, in containers or planters, as a border or edger, around decks, swimming pools, and other outdoor living areas, as an accent, as a groundcover, in landscape beds or islands or in small groupings and also in rock or xeriscape gardens or perennial gardens.

More About Silverine Hen And Chicks...

Silverine Hens And Chicks's attractive succulent pointy leaves emerge burgundy in spring, turning deep purple in color with distinctive grayish green edges and tinges of silver throughout the season. It features unusual clusters of rose star-shaped flowers with deep purple bracts rising above the foliage in mid summer. The fruit is not ornamentally significant. The brick red stems can be quite attractive.

Hen and Chicks are perfect for planting around rocks and boulders in rock gardens and garden ponds, container garden of all types, rooftop gardens and rock walls.

Very easy to grow, Hen and Chicks prefer a very well-drained, sandy or rocky soil and full sun to part shade. Constantly soggy or wet soils are problematic.

Hen and Chicks are very low maintenance, drought tolerant plants that require no fertilization. After flowering, the mother rosette dies to leave room for the chicks: remove this by tugging gently at the base of the bloom stem. Plants are not bothered by deer and have no serious insect or disease problems.
