Jade Rose Hen And Chicks is a slow growing perennial plant and succulent plant that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 4B through 8B. It matures to an average height of 1 inch to 1 foot and an average width of 6 inches to 1 foot, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides full sun, morning sun with afternoon shade or morning shade with afternoon sun and grows best when planted in sand or loam soil that is well drained. The foliage is burgundy, red and medium green in color. It attracts visual attention and is resistant to deer, drought, insects and heat.
Jade Rose Hen And Chicks can be useful in the landscape in containers or planters, as a border or edger, as an accent, between stepping stones and pavers, in landscape beds or islands or in small groupings and also in rock or xeriscape gardens, theme gardens or perennial gardens.
Jade Rose’s foliage is bright, medium green as it emerges and then starts developing deep rose edges which eventually spread to the whole inside of the leaf; the outside remains green. The succulent leaves also have tiny white hairs on the tips and along the sides that make them appear fuzzy and really sparkly when dewy or wet. Red flowers are produced on short stalks during summer.
Hen and Chicks are perfect for planting around rocks and boulders in rock gardens and garden ponds, container garden of all types, rooftop gardens and rock walls.
Very easy to grow, Hen and Chicks prefer a very well-drained, sandy or rocky soil and full sun to part shade. Constantly soggy or wet soils are problematic.
Hen and Chicks are very low maintenance, drought tolerant plants that require no fertilization. After flowering, the mother rosette dies to leave room for the chicks: remove this by tugging gently at the base of the bloom stem. Plants are not bothered by deer and have no serious insect or disease problems.
