Perennial Plumbago is a fast and moderate growing groundcover plant and perennial plant that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 6A through 9B. It matures to an average height of 1 inch to 1 foot and an average width of 1 foot to 2 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides full sun, morning sun with afternoon shade or morning shade with afternoon sun and grows best when planted in loam, clay or silt soil that is well drained. In the summer Perennial Plumbago produces blue and bright blue flowers. The foliage is bronze and medium green in color.
Perennial Plumbago can be useful in the landscape along woodland borders, in mass plantings, in foundation plantings, in containers or planters, as a groundcover, in landscape beds or islands, to accentuate entryways or in small groupings and also in perennial gardens.
More About Hardy Blue Plumbago...Hardy Blue Plumbago, Ceratostigma plumbaginoides, also commonly called Leadwort, is a wiry, mat-forming perennial which spreads by rhizomes to form an attractive ground cover. Stunning. 5-petaled, electric blue flowers are produced above the foliage during the the summer and all the way to frost! Flowers resemble those of woodland phlox and couldn't be prettier against the burgundy fall foliage.
Hardy Blue Plumbago serves as excellent ground cover for sunny to partly shaded areas in the landscape. A good plant for interplanting with spring bulbs because foliage emerges late as the bulb foliage is dying back. It is also an excellent underplanting for shrubs or an edger along paths. As a ground cover, plumbago would probably be as extensively planted as vinca, pachysandra or English ivy, except for the fact that it lacks their evergreen foliage. We don;t mind that it's deciduous and have it planted as a back of the border groundcover under small trees and such.
Plumbago likes to be in a sunny average-dry location. It tolerates some shade, but won't bloom as well. A good choice for poor soils and difficult sites. Looks beautiful in a container or spilling over a wall!
