Additional Information About Peruvian Red Hardy Verbena

Verbena Peruviana 'Red Devil' is a fast growing groundcover plant and perennial plant that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 6A through 10B. It matures to an average height of 2 feet to 4 feet and an average width of 6 inches to 1 foot, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides full sun and grows best when planted in sand, loam, clay or silt soil that is well drained. In the spring, summer and fall Peruvian Red Hardy Verbena produces red flowers. The foliage is dark green in color. It attracts butterflies, hummingbirds and visual attention and is resistant to deer, drought and heat.

Peruvian Red Hardy Verbena can be useful in the landscape in mass plantings, in containers or planters, as a border or edger, as a groundcover, in landscape beds or islands or in annual flower beds and also in rock or xeriscape gardens, butterfly gardens, hummingbird gardens or perennial gardens.

More About Peruvian Red Verbena...

One from our 'Toe Tickler' collection, this hardy verbena species is a very low grower (2-3" tall), perfect for a sunny rock wall. Verbena peruviana, also known as 'Red Devil' Verbena, has tiny leaves and is smothered with brilliant, incredibly true red flowers from spring through summer. Butterflies and hummingbirds love it! This is one of the most cold hardy of the Verbenas!

Peruvian Red Verbena is a drought tolerant plant however, during hot weather, regular irrigation will encourage more blooms. Though it is a spreader, it is not a rampant grower and can be interplanted around other taller perennials, where it will slowly spread with its tiny, thick 1" long leaves and its stiff woody stems. Let up on the water in the fall to harden it for winter. Constantly wet or soggy soil is a killer.

Peruviana Red Verbena is an excellent choice for a border or small area groundcover in sunny garden spots. It will cascade over walls or over the edges of pots in container gardens.
