Black Hens And Chicks is a moderate growing perennial plant that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 3A through 10B. It prefers growing in a location that provides full sun and grows best when planted in sand or loam soil that is well drained. The foliage is blue green in color. It attracts visual attention and is resistant to deer, drought, insects and diseases.
Black Hens And Chicks can be useful in the landscape in containers or planters, as a border or edger, around decks, swimming pools, and other outdoor living areas, as an accent, in landscape beds or islands or in small groupings and also in rock or xeriscape gardens or theme gardens.
Hens & Chicks are always a welcome sight, and this exciting 'Black' variety is a newer take on the old favorite. 'Black' has fleshy green leaves in which the tips appear to have been dipped in deep purple dye, accenting the green center of the plant. During the cool season the leaves turn almost completely pruplish-bronze.
Hen and Chicks are exceptionally low maintenance and drought tolerant plants that are highly useful in rock gardens, container garden of all types, rooftop gardens, rock walls and around boulders. They require very wel-drained sandy or gravelly soil in garden beds or containers.
