Liriope Spicata 'Silver Dragon' is a moderate growing groundcover plant that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 4A through 10B. It prefers growing in a location that provides full sun, shade, morning sun with afternoon shade, morning shade with afternoon sun or filtered sun and grows best when planted in sand, loam, clay or silt soil that is well drained. The foliage is yellow and white in color. It attracts butterflies, hummingbirds, visual attention and songbirds / birds and is resistant to deer, drought, insects, diseases and heat.
Silver Dragon Liriope can be useful in the landscape in mass plantings, in foundation plantings, in containers or planters, as a border or edger, around decks, swimming pools, and other outdoor living areas, as an accent, under a shade tree, as a groundcover, in hanging baskets or in landscape beds or islands and also in rock or xeriscape gardens, theme gardens, cottage gardens, butterfly gardens or hummingbird gardens.
Silver Dragon Liriope is a grass-like perennial which forms clumps of narrow, green leaves striped with beautiful silver and ivory. Erect flower spikes with pale lavender flowers arise among the leaves in late summer followed by black berries. The foliage provides a stunning contrast with dark foliage plants. Spreads fast under shallow-rooted trees and along streams or ponds. We've found it to be quite tolerant of drought when established.
We use Silver Dragon Liriope in rock gardens around boulders and rocks, in contained areas as a groundcover, as an underplanting around small trees, and to provide a grassy texture in mixed container gardens.
Silver Dragon is very easy to grow and maintain. It is not too picky about soil type provided there is good drainage. Full sun or part shade is preferred.
