Pennisetum Alopecuroides 'Hameln' is a fast and moderate growing ornamental grass and perennial plant that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 5A through 9B. It matures to an average height of 2 feet to 3 feet and an average width of 2 feet to 3 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides full sun and grows best when planted in loam, clay or silt soil that is well drained. In the summer and fall Hameln Fountain Grass produces cream and white flowers. The foliage is medium green in color. It attracts visual attention and is resistant to deer, drought, insects, diseases, mildew and heat.
Hameln Fountain Grass can be useful in the landscape in mass plantings, in foundation plantings, in containers or planters, around decks, swimming pools, and other outdoor living areas, as an accent, as a groundcover, in hanging baskets, in landscape beds or islands, to accentuate entryways or in small groupings and also in rock or xeriscape gardens, theme gardens, cottage gardens or perennial gardens.
Hameln Dwarf Fountain Grass, Pennisetum alopecuroides, is a compact form with tidy tufts of foliage that are topped in late summer with pretty, fuzzy cream-colored blooms.
Hameln Fountain Grass is often used for its radiating, fine-textured effect in the landscape, especially beautiful when the late Summer breezes sway its bottlebrush-like inflorescences. Small garden spaces lend themselves well to this dwarf fountain grass. Plants grow about 2 feet tall and are clump-forming. One to three plants are effective in small gardens as an accent, and in larger areas, mass plantings are stunning. This grass adds structure to the winter garden as well as seed for birds.
Dwarf fountain grass prefers full sun in evenly moist, well-drained soils, but will adapt to poor soils with occasional drought. Siting in partial shade will result in decreased vigor and virtually no flowering. Occasional deep watering is needed during drought to keep foliage from rolling and twisting; it is common to see tips turn brown during drought. Shear dead portions back to 3 inches above ground by late March (use gloves when handling the serrated foliage) to allow new growth to emerge.
Like many of the grasses, there are virtually no disease or pest problems with Hameln Dwarf Fountain Grass. A trouble-free and reliable garden plant!
