Noteworthy Characteristics
Although most cypress are evergreen, Bald Cypress trees are diciduous conifers that shed their foliage in the fall. The fiery-orange fall color is spectacular. The bark is brown to gray with a stringy texture. Bald Cypress are known for their 'knees'. They aren't knees like ours, but rather a special kind of root at the base of the trunk. The roots are air bearing meaning that they protrude upward from the roots below ground and attach to the trunk above the ground surface. This unique feature is perhaps what allows the Bald Cypress to grow in swampy and boggy areas. This being said, Bald Cypress will perform well in most soil types and doesn't require bog or consistantly wet soil conditions.
Uses
Excellent for use as a single specimen tree, in groups, as a street tree, to provide shade, or just about anywhere in the landscape that gets full sun and has plenty of space. The root system can become quite extensive, so leave plenty of room.
Culture
Bald Cypress is easy to grow. Provide plenty of water the first year after planting. Prefers full or mostly sun. Grows well in boggy wet areas or dry, well drained soils. Leave room for it's extensive fast growing root system. Bald cypress is extremely fast growing tree.
