Muhlenbergia Capillaris 'White Cloud' is a fast growing ornamental grass and perennial plant that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 6A through 11. It matures to an average height of 2 feet to 4 feet and an average width of 2 feet to 4 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides full sun, morning sun with afternoon shade or morning shade with afternoon sun and grows best when planted in sand soil that is well drained. In the fall White Cloud Muhly Grass produces white flowers. The foliage is dark green in color. It attracts wildlife, visual attention and songbirds / birds and is resistant to deer, drought, insects, diseases, mildew, heat and salty soil and/or spray.
White Cloud Muhly Grass can be useful in the landscape in mass plantings, in containers or planters, in landscape beds or islands, for erosion control or in small groupings and also in rock or xeriscape gardens or perennial gardens.
The tall, slender green leaves of White Cloud Muhly Grass reach 2 1/2 feet tall and 4 feet wide, an attractive sight in spring and summer. But their real show begins in fall, when the clumps of foliage are topped by glittering, airy plumes of silvery-white, as puffy as clouds. The cloud-like texture of these blooms adds terrific softness to the garden, and as they mature to tan in winter, birds perch to feast upon their ripening seeds. A lovely display for any sunny spot!
'White Cloud' is ideal for mass planting as a perimeter planting or on slopes, or as a border standout, or hedge. It also works well in coastal gardens. It also can be used singly and in small groups to accent the border or decorate a large container. Very easy to grow, it appreciates pampering the first year with adequate food and water to get its root system established. After this, it takes off on its own!
Like it's pink cousin, White Cloud Muhly Grass is an exceptionally easy to grow and maintain. It is exceptionally resistant to heat, humidity, sun, salt, and drought. Make sure to plant it in very well-drained soil. Add sand to the planting mix if necessary to provide good drainage. Full sun is preffered for best flowering however the plant will tolerate and still flower with some light shade. If necessary, cut back foliage to ground in late winter before new growth begins to emerge in spring.
From early fall through mid-winter, this upright green grass with hair-like foliage is topped with airy plumes that add soft color and texture to the garden. If you have admired Pink Muhly Grass, you will really love its goes-with-anything white cousin. This native grass couldn't be easier to grow and the flowers are great in fresh or dried cut flower arrangements!
