Additional Information About Royal Purple Liriope

Liriope Muscari 'Royal Purple' is a moderate growing groundcover plant, ornamental grass and perennial plant that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 6A through 10B. It matures to an average height of 1 inch to 1 foot and an average width of 6 inches to 1 foot, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides shade, morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sun and grows best when planted in sand, loam, clay or silt soil that is well drained. In the summer and fall Royal Purple Liriope produces purple flowers. The foliage is dark green in color. It attracts butterflies and visual attention and is resistant to deer, drought, insects, diseases, mildew and heat.

Royal Purple Liriope can be useful in the landscape along woodland borders, in mass plantings, in foundation plantings, in containers or planters, as a border or edger, under a shade tree, as a groundcover, in hanging baskets, in landscape beds or islands or for erosion control and also in theme gardens or cottage gardens.

More About Royal Purple Liriope...

From summer to fall, Liriope 'Royal Purple' produces tall clusters of deep violet-purple flowers on spikes held well above the foliage. Its dark green leaves are long and narrow and grow in compact, fountain-like clumps. The blooms of 'Royal Purple' are taller and showier than most. Plants will grow in full sun to almost full shade, however prefer afternoon shade in the South, and have good tolerance for heat, humidity and drought!

This evergreen perennial of the lily family is one of the most widely used groundcover plants in existence - and for very good reason! Unlike other Liriope varieties that spread wildly, Royal Purple forms neat clumps of grassy foliage that gradually increase in size over time, making it a perfect choice for use as a border.

It's clumping rather than spreading growth habit make it the perfect choice for a border however we have used it all over our gardens in mass plantings under trees and in other shady areas. This is a groundcover plant highly suitable for home foundation plantings. It can also be used singly or in combination with other plants in container gardens where it adds a very nice vertical accent and grassy texture.

Royal Purple Liriope prefers a moist but well-drained loose soil however will grow in most any average soil. When established it is quite drought tolerant and only requires supplemental irrigation during prolonged periods of severe drought. It will tolerate full sun however, in the South, it looks and performs better given some shade during the afternoon. If you're looking for a Liriope that will tolerate full sun check out 'Variegata.'

If you are looking for toughness and good looks, Royal Purple Liriope is hard to beat!
