Loropetalum Chinense 'Red Diamond™ ‘Shang-Red’' is a fast and moderate growing shrub that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 7A through 10B. It matures to an average height of 5 feet to 6 feet and an average width of 4 feet to 6 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides full sun, morning sun with afternoon shade or morning shade with afternoon sun and grows best when planted in sand, loam, clay or silt soil that is well drained or moderately drained. In the spring Red Diamond Loropetalum produces red flowers. The foliage is burgundy and purple in color. It attracts visual attention and is resistant to deer, drought, insects, diseases, mildew and heat.
Red Diamond Loropetalum can be useful in the landscape in mass plantings, in foundation plantings, as a buffer or screen, as a background, in shrub borders, as an accent, for topiary, as a focal point, in landscape beds or islands or to frame the corners of a home or other building and also in theme gardens.
Noteworthy Characteristics
Red Diamond™ Loropetalum boasts the most intense purple foliage color of any plant on the market! Vibrant red, witchhazel-like, fringy flowers are heavy in spring, appear occasionally in summer, and again in fall. The foliage provides a stunning contrast with the bright red flowers. Mature height is about 6 feet with an equal spread. It can be pruned or sheared year-round for a more formal shape or to limit size.
Uses
Red Diamond™ Loropetalum is useful as a foundation plant, a colorful natural or clipped formal hedge, espalier-grown flat against a wall, as an accent, as a small tree, or in small to large groupings in landscape beds.
Culture & Care Tips
Plant it in locations that provide well-drained soils and full sun to part shade. In our trial gardens, we've had Loropetalum growing in sites that provide anywhere from full sun to half a days shade. Plants grows a little fuller and foliage color is more intense with more sun. Pruning is minimal unless you want to shear it into a more formal shape. When established, Loropetalum are exceptionally drought tolerant. However, water enough during the first year after planting to keep the root ball and surrounding soil moist but not constantly soggy. Loropetalum does not like wet feet. It's best to provide an occasional deep soaking when needed rather than a little or a lot of water every day.
