Athyrium Niponicum Var. Pictum 'Pictum' is a moderate growing perennial plant that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 4A through 9B. It matures to an average height of 1 foot to 2 feet and an average width of 1 foot to 2 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides shade, morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sun and grows best when planted in loam, clay or silt soil that is well drained or moderately drained. The foliage is white and grey / silver in color. It attracts visual attention and is resistant to deer, insects, diseases and heat.
Japanese Painted Fern can be useful in the landscape in mass plantings, in foundation plantings, in containers or planters, as a border or edger, around decks, swimming pools, and other outdoor living areas, as an accent, under a shade tree, in hanging baskets or in small groupings and also in theme gardens or cottage gardens.
The Japanese Painted Fern, Athyrium niponicum var. pictum 'Pictum', is very showy hardy fern that displays soft, grayish-green and silvery fronds.
The Japanese Painted Fern is easy to grow and low maintenance. It is hardy nearly everywhere in the United States, except for the desert areas and northern areas above Zone 3. For it's outstanding beauty and performance in the garden it was named Perennial Plant of the Year in 2004.
The Japanese Painted Fern grows up to two feet high and two feet wide in the garden and can also be grown in container gardens. Like most ferns it prefers a well-drained but moist soil rich in organic matter and partial shade. Morning sun with afternoon shade or late afternoon sun is fine. Some sun will help to bring out the most vivid foliage colors.
The Japanese Painted Fern is perfect as a border plant, mass planted for a very dramatic effect, and really fits in nicely near streams or garden ponds. It can also be used as a wonderful accent plant, as most other shade loving plants are unable to attain the bright vivid colors.
