Sempervivum Tentorum 'Sunset' is a moderate growing perennial plant and succulent plant that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 5A through 9B. It matures to an average height of 1 inch to 1 foot and an average width of 6 inches to 1 foot, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides full sun and grows best when planted in sand or loam soil that is well drained. In the summer Sunset Hens And Chicks produces pink flowers. The foliage is burgundy, red and medium green in color. It attracts visual attention and is resistant to drought, insects, mildew and heat.
Sunset Hens And Chicks can be useful in the landscape in mass plantings, in containers or planters, as a border or edger, around decks, swimming pools, and other outdoor living areas, as an accent, as a groundcover, in landscape beds or islands or in small groupings and also in rock or xeriscape gardens, theme gardens or perennial gardens.
Sunset Hen and Chicks is a more dwarf variety with smaller rosettes than Sempervivum ‘Silverine’. The center of the rosettes is green and the mature leaves quickly change to bright red. A very attractive clustering form.
Hen and Chicks are perfect for planting around rocks and boulders in rock gardens and garden ponds, container garden of all types, rooftop gardens and rock walls.
Very easy to grow, Hen and Chicks prefer a very well-drained, sandy or rocky soil and full sun to part shade. Constantly soggy or wet soils are problematic.
Hen and Chicks are very low maintenance, drought tolerant plants that require no fertilization. After flowering, the mother rosette dies to leave room for the chicks: remove this by tugging gently at the base of the bloom stem. Plants are not bothered by deer and have no serious insect or disease problems.
