Juniperus Virginiana 'Burkii' is a fast and moderate growing shrub and tree that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 3A through 9B. It matures to an average height of 12 feet to 15 feet and an average width of 4 feet to 6 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides full sun or morning shade with afternoon sun and grows best when planted in sand, loam, clay or silt soil that is well drained or moderately drained. In the spring Burkii Juniper produces light yellow flowers. The foliage is medium green and dark green in color. It attracts visual attention and is resistant to deer, drought, insects, diseases, mildew and heat. If you like fragrance, Juniperus Virginiana 'Burkii' has fragrant foliage.
Burkii Juniper can be useful in the landscape as a buffer or screen, as a background, around decks, swimming pools, and other outdoor living areas, in landscape beds or islands, to frame the corners of a home or other building, to accentuate entryways or as a tree form shrub and also in theme gardens.
Noteworthy Characteristics
Burkii is a very handsome upright Juniper that has been around for quite a while, yet continues to be a popular choice for border plantings, privacy screens, and single specimen tree. It has a narrow to broadly pyramidal shape / growth habit, and very nice silvery blue foliage that is very aromatic when rubbed or crushed. During the winter months Burkii will have a slightly purplish cast to the foliage. Very hardy variety with a moderate to fast growth rate and needs no trimming or pruning to keep a nice shape as it grows. Definitely an upright juniper that is worthy of consideration.
Uses
Useful in landscape beds, islands and medians as screen, buffer, specimen, or in groups. Useful on the corners of tall homes or a building to frame the outside corners.
Culture
Burkii Juniper is easy to grow in well-drained soils and full sun or light shade. It isn't fussy about soil type even growing in dense clay. No pruning is required unless you want to shear it for a more formal shape. Feed in spring with a well-balanced shrub and tree type fertilizer.
How To Plant A Tree On A Slope, Hill Or Embankment
How To Stake A Newly Planted Tree
Excellent pricing on a somewhat compact version of Eastern Red Cedar (juniperus virginiana) that has a great steely blue color with a tinge of green. This is in contrast to the brighter to olive green of the standard Eastern Red Cedar. Burkii also is suitable to plant underneath powerlines if you are in that situation and can be a great border plant or wind break. At the price you can get these for on Gardener Direct you can easily afford a nice wind break by spacing about 4-5 feet apart. They are relatively fast growers and super drought tolerant as well as not picky about soil. Just make sure you plant in an area that receives full sun to just a bit of shade. They do not tolerate heavy shade or afternoon into evening shade. Water well to establish and after that you can pretty much forget about the plant which is the beauty of the Eastern Red Cedar parent stock. This plant is native to a huge part of the US and as such is far more resistant to diseases than many other types of evergreens you see planted. The Burkii also has the characteristic cedar aroma which you will definitely smell when you open the package you receive from Gardener Direct. Remember the aroma as you can take advantage of this by planting near your driveway to enjoy when you get home from work or plant near a pool to enjoy the smell while on your patio. Overall a great way to enjoy the beauty of the Eastern Red Cedar without needing quite as much room as the straight varietal of the parent plant. Only pruning maintenance would be possibly cutting back and competing leaders as these junipers thrive best with a single leader as snow can cause multi-leader trees to break from the weight. You also may need to stake it a bit when first planted to allow it to straighten up after shipping. Great service from Gardener Direct! I ordered 3 trees and 1 of them had the central leader snapped off half way up the height of the plant and GD was fantastic about sending a replacement quickly! Would highly recommend this plant for a beautiful long lived evergreen and Gardener Direct for their 5* service.
Thanks Tom!
