Additional Information About Green Santolina

Santolina Virens 'none' is a moderate growing shrub, groundcover plant, herb and perennial plant that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 6A through 9B. It matures to an average height of 1 foot to 2 feet and an average width of 2 feet to 3 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides full sun and grows best when planted in sand, loam, clay or silt soil that is well drained. In the summer Green Santolina produces yellow flowers. The foliage is dark green in color. It attracts visual attention and is resistant to deer, drought, insects and heat. If you like fragrance, Santolina Virens 'none' has fragrant foliage.

Green Santolina can be useful in the landscape in mass plantings, in containers or planters, as a border or edger, around decks, swimming pools, and other outdoor living areas, as a groundcover, in landscape beds or islands, in small groupings or as a hedge and also in rock or xeriscape gardens, herb gardens or perennial gardens.

More About Green Santolina...

Green santolina is an evergreen subshrub that typically grow from 12 to 18 inches tall and spread out 3 to 5 feet having bright leaves with finely toothed edges that are tightly massed on the stem, giving plants a feathery appearance. Half-inch, yellow, button-like flowers bloom in spring and stretch their stems to about two feet tall.

Growing Preferences

Santolina grows best in light, sandy, well drained, alkaline to slightly acidic soils and full to mostly sun. Once established, plants are exceptionally drought tolerant and have very low water needs. Constantly soggy soil can cause root rot, which can lead to death of the plant. Save your soil amendments for other plants, for santolina does not need rich soil. It does quite well left to its own devices with little or no fertilizer. Performance is enhanced by the addition of a bit of lime to the soil.  Temperatures down to 0°F are tolerated, so it is hardy in large portions of the country.

Prune in early spring before new growth begins to keep plants full and dense. Plants that are pruned drastically in spring most likely will not bloom, but such shearing will rejuvenate the plant. Remove flower stalks when bloom is finished and they have become unsightly.

Uses

Santolina is a great addition to herbal crafts. A dozen or so stems of gray santolina cut and bound with a piece of twine or a rubber band and hung upside down in a dry, airy place will help to retain their color and benzoin-like fragrance. In a few weeks they are dry enough to work into a wreath with other dried herbs. The button-like flowers dry well, too, and provide additional decoration for wreaths and other crafts. Santolina can also be used as a component in potpourri. Place stems of santolina along with other fragrant foliage, flowers, cones, sticks, and various plant parts in a sachet bag or small pillow to use arund the home or office.

Besides its decorative uses, a decoction can be made from the flowers and leaves that is said to expel intestinal parasites. The perfume industry extracts oils from the plants for use in making perfumes. Some people put a few of the stems in chests of drawers and closets where they effectively repel moths. Dried crumbled leaves are said to make a pleasant flavoring for some dishes. Leaves rubbed on insect bites reputedly relieve the pain of the sting, and the yellow flowers can be boiled to make a bright yellow dye.

Santolina is a plant with many uses, but chief among them is simply their use as attractive, undemanding landscape plants that are easy to care for and have few pests. That alone is sufficient reason to include them in your garden.
