Vitis Rotundifolia 'Albermarle' is a fast growing vining plant and fruit bearing plant that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 7A through 10B. It matures to an average height of 8 feet to 12 feet and an average width of 8 feet to 20 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides full sun and grows best when planted in sand, loam or clay soil that is well drained. The foliage is light green, medium green and dark green in color. It attracts wildlife and is resistant to drought, insects, diseases and heat.
This is the fun part! There are lots of Muscadine varieties to choose from - each offers fruit with its own, truly unique attributes. Among these are: 'Size', 'Color', 'Soluble Sugar%', is a 'Pollinator' required for fertilization/fruiting, typical 'Ripening' period, and more. What really should determine which muscadine varieties you choose is what 'Uses' you have planned for them. Why not plant an assortment of Early-Mid-Late season varieties, and extend your muscadine harvest season? Keep in mind, there are two different types of muscadines: 1) 'Self-Fertile' types - which are self-pollinating, and 2) 'Self-Sterile' (female) types - which must be planted in close proximity to 'Self-Fertile' types in order to produce fruit. 'Albermarle' is a very productive, self-fertile, black muscadine, with a Soluble Sugar content of 17-18% - making it an excellent choice for fresh eating! Albermarle ripens in Early to Mid-season, and produces medium-sized fruit with a dry stem scar - helping to prolong its storage/shelf-life properties.
