Noteworthy Characteristics

Chamaecyparis obtusa ' Lutea Compacta' is a very attractive dwarf Hinoki cypress displaying whorled, flattened sprays of golden-yellow foliage and slightly dropping branch tips on upright, compact, pyrimidal plants to about 6 feet tall that provide interesting texture in the garden. If you're looking for a truly eyecatching, beautiful specimen for a smaller space this one should be at the top of your list. In hotter climates (Zone 7-8) this cypress prefers a break from direct afternoon sun. In our gardens we have it growing in a spot that receives some morning sun and afternoon dappled light that filters through a large tree.

Uses

Pewrfect for use as a single specimen, in small groupings or clusters, to accentuate an entryway in home foundation plantings, and in container gardens, Asian theme gardens, rock gardens, small-space gardens, and conifer gardens

Culture & Care Tips

Golden Dwarf hinoki Cypress prefers a well-drained, somewhat dry soil and full sun to part sun. In hotter regions of the South (Zones 7-8) it will appreciate some shade or filtered sun during the hottest part of the day. When established it is exceptionally drought tolerant.
