Additional Information About Carex testacea - Prairie Fire Orange Sedge

Orange Sedge is a moderate growing ornamental grass and perennial plant that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 5A through 9A. It matures to an average height of 1 foot to 2 feet and an average width of 1 foot to 2 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides shade, morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sun and grows best when planted in sand, loam, clay or silt soil that is well drained or moderately drained. The foliage is orange and dark green in color. It attracts visual attention and is resistant to deer, insects, diseases and heat.

Orange Sedge can be useful in the landscape in mass plantings, in containers or planters, as a border or edger, as an accent, as a groundcover, in landscape beds or islands, for erosion control or in small groupings and also in theme gardens, bog gardens, perennial gardens or shade gardens.

More About Prairie Fire Orange Sedge...

Prairie Fire Orange Sedge is a mounding ornamental grass with distinctive coloring that makes it a delight in any garden, especially when combined with other grasses or broad-leafed perennials. The hair-like olive green foliage takes on a vivid tangerine-colored blush at the tips and glows brilliantly in the sunlight particularly in cold weather. Mature plants grow to 15” tall with a similar spread.

Prairie Fire Orange Sedge is useful as an accent plant in containers or garden beds. It really looks and performs nicely along waterways or near garden ponds. It combines nicely with other types of ornamental grasses and plants with bold texture and color.

Prairie Fire Orange Sedge grows best in moist, well-drained soils. It tolerates sun or shade, but most gardeners agree that the foliage color is best with at least a half day of sun. In our garden this sedge has reseeded in a pleasing fashion in both sun and shade.
