Additional Information About Holly Fern

Dryopteris Falcatum 'Rochfordianum' is a moderate growing perennial plant that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 7A through 11. It matures to an average height of 1 foot to 2 feet and an average width of 1 foot to 2 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides shade, morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sun and grows best when planted in sand, loam, clay or silt soil that is well drained or moderately drained. The foliage is dark green in color.

Holly Fern can be useful in the landscape along woodland borders, in mass plantings, in foundation plantings, in containers or planters, around decks, swimming pools, and other outdoor living areas, under a shade tree, as a groundcover, in landscape beds or islands, to accentuate entryways or in small groupings and also in theme gardens, perennial gardens or shade gardens.

More About Japanese Holly Fern...

Japanese Holly Fern, Cyrtomium falcatum, is a handsome fern that sports glossy, vety dark green fronds on arching stems that form a mound up to 2 feet high and 3 feet wide.  The individual pinnae are leathery, serrated with sharp points, and have a remarkable resemblance to holly leaves - thus the common name. It is evergreen in frost-free areas, but loses its fronds in colder climates, returning in spring when temperatures warm.

The Japanese Holly Fern likes rich, acidic, moist soil and good drainage. Constantly soggy soils can cause problems with the roots and foliage. It tolerates more sun than many ferns however needs some dhade during the hottest part of the day. Morning sun with afternoon shade is perfect. It thrives with occasional fish emulsion or liquid fertilizer. It requires little pruning though you can groom it anytime the foliage becomes frayed or unsightly.

The Japanese Holly Fern can be used as a house plant in fairly bright light, or grown outside in part shade as filler in shady garden beds, in containers, or in hanging baskets. It is makes a very attractive border around large trees or shrub beds. Many use it as a background to annual flower beds that contain impatiens or other shade-loving plants.

Japanese Holly Fern is a tough plant that is inexpensive and easy to grow.
