Additional Information About Charm Red Hydrangea

Hydrangea Macrophylla 'Charm' is a fast growing shrub that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 5A through 9B. It matures to an average height of 4 feet to 5 feet and an average width of 4 feet to 6 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides shade, morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sun and grows best when planted in loam or clay soil that is well drained or moderately drained. In the spring Charm Hydrangea produces purple, red, maroon and scarlet flowers. The foliage is chartreuse, medium green and dark green in color. It attracts visual attention and is resistant to insects, diseases and heat.

Charm Hydrangea can be useful in the landscape along woodland borders, as a background, around decks, swimming pools, and other outdoor living areas, under a shade tree, in landscape beds or islands or in small groupings and also in cottage gardens, perennial gardens or shade gardens.

More about Charm Hydrangea...

Noteworthy Characteristics

We're not sure if this one can really be called a 'red" Hydrangea, but the large, pretty deep rosy-pink to rosy-blue flowerheads of 'Charm' sure are stunning in our gardens! This large mophead hydrangea bears lots of showy blooms on cold sensitive plants with exceptionally glossy, dark green leaves. As with other macophyllas. flower color varies depending on soil pH. The flowers of ‘Charm’ tend towards rosy pink but develop blue hues in highly alkaline soils. Its flowers are great for cutting and use in fresh or dried floral arrangements.

Uses

Charm is a larger growing Hydrangea (4-6'H x 4-6'W) that lends well to large containers or garden beds. Use it as a specimen in smaller garden spaces or in groupings in larger garden spaces. Also great as an accent in foundation plantings, as a colorful hedge, in flowering shrub borders and in cottage gardens.

Culture & Care Tips

Charm Hydrangea prefers full sun in northern zones and some afternoon shade or filtered sun the farther south you go. Adapts to various soil stypes however prefers a well-drained moist, loamy soil. Not too wet though...Hydrangea don't like constantly soggy soil. This mophead blooms on old wood so should be pruned right after they bloom, when the blooms have faded. Reach down into the bush and cut off the stems to about a foot high, right above a bud.

USDA Zones: 4-9
