Additional Information About Steeds Holly

Ilex Crenata 'Steeds' is a moderate growing shrub that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 5A through 8B. It matures to an average height of 6 feet to 8 feet and an average width of 2 feet to 4 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides full sun, morning sun with afternoon shade or morning shade with afternoon sun and grows best when planted in loam, clay or silt soil that is well drained or moderately drained. In the spring Steeds Holly produces white and light green flowers. The foliage is dark green in color. It attracts visual attention and is resistant to deer, drought, insects, diseases, mildew and heat.

Steeds Holly can be useful in the landscape along woodland borders, in foundation plantings, in containers or planters, as a background, in shrub borders, around decks, swimming pools, and other outdoor living areas, for topiary, in landscape beds or islands, to accentuate entryways or as a hedge and also in theme gardens.

More about Steeds Holly...

Noteworthy Characteristics

Steeds holly, Ilex Crenata 'Steeds', is an evergreen holly that has a pyramidal shape. Being a Japanese holly it has small shiny oval shaped, boxwood-like leaves. The shiny leaves are a medium green on the new foliage and then turn darker with age. During late summer to fall Steeds Holly will produce an abundant amount of dark purple-blue berries that are good for adding winter color and attracting wildlife.

Uses

Steeds Holly is the perfect choice for planting on both sides of a door or other entryway. It is also useful planted between windows in home foundation plantings and in containers. When spaced more closely together, it will make a good hedge.

Culture & Care Tips

The Steeds Holly is easy to grow in locations that provide well-drained, acidic soil and full sun to light shade. Avoid planting in soils that remain consistently soggy as this will cause problems with the roots. It is drought tolerant when established only requiring supplemental irrigation during prolonged periods of drought during summer. Though Steeds Holly will keep a natural, loose, pyramidal shape on it's own, a once or twice a year shearing is helpful to keep the shrub more dense.
