English IvyMore about English Ivy...

English ivy is an excellent evergreen foliage plant for indoor or outdoor use. When it comes to groundcover plants and ornamental value, English Ivy is hard to beat.

English Ivy can be used as a groundcover in small to large landscape beds however steps need to be taken to ensure it does not spread into natural or woodland areas where it can become quite invasive. It works nicely in container gardens and hanging planters to cascade over the edges. It can also be trained into formal shapes on trellises or made into topiary figures. In large interior plantings, English ivy makes a good ground cover and cover in free-standing planters containing interior trees.

When planting as a groundcover in the landscape we highly recommend planting English Ivy in areas where it can be easily be kept in bounds by trimming around the edges. It works well as a groundcover under shade trees however you'll need to clip it once or twice a year to keep it from growing up the trunks of trees.

English Ivy is very easy to grow and maintain with the right conditions. It will flourish in most garden soils, including heavy clay, but prefers well-drained fertile soils that are not too alkaline and do not stay constantly soggy or wet. Any time of year you can trim to shape when growth gets excessive and tie in to encourage climbing up trellises. It will survive heavy shade or full sun, however prefers some afternoon shade in hotter climates. easy to grow in any average soil, including clay, however prefers well-drained fertile soils.
