More about Olive Martini™ Elaeagnus

Noteworthy Characteristics

Another spectacular introduction from the Southern Living Plant Collection, Olive Martini™ is a new cultivar of evergreen Elaeagnus that was originally found by Christian Vivies in Toulouse, France, as a natural mutation of Elaeagnus x ebbingei.

Attractive yellow-gold leaf margins and silvery new growth highlight Olive Martini™ when used as a hedge or as a specimen plant.  The leathery, glossy, evergreen leaves and upright, dense form make for the perfect privacy hedge or barrier. Orange-brown twigs contrast nicely with the leaves and deepen in color as colder weather sets in in the fall.

Apart from the attractive, colorful foliage, this plant is also interesting for its almost invisible but very fragrant flowers. They are tiny and appear from late summer to early autumn. They have a lovely, sweet perfume that is distributed especially on sunny and warm afternoons and evenings. They are followed by edible, deep red oval fruits that taste like sweet dark cherries. It is best to let them ripen well which is when they begin to fall down. The plant can hold the fruit only after mild winters.

Uses

Vibrant foliage edged in gold and silvery new growth creates a quick, long-lived, striking hedge, backdrop or specimen in the sunny border. In zones above 6b, where the plant is not winter hardy, plants can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during the winter months.

Culture & Care Tips

Olive Martini™ Elaeagnus is very easy to grow in sunny areas of the landscape. The plant will tolerate some light shade but the foliage color is more intense with more sun. It is adaptable to many soil types provided the soil is well-drained. As with so many other shrubs, this one does not like constantly soggy soil, which can lead to problems with the roots. It simply will not live in boggy and wet conditions.
