Noteworthy Characteristics

Eucalyptus neglecta ‘Big O’ is quickly becoming one of the most popular eucalyptus in the United States. Nick-named ‘Big 0’ for its unique, perfectly round leaves. Juvenile foliage is vivid blue with red highlights, fragrant, and a stand out in any floral or dried flower arrangement. The juvenile leaves are large and round and on square stems, and usually persist for 7-15 years before any adult leaves are seen, which are elongated. In a cool, moist climate the foliage assumes a fabulous purplish hue.  The bark is rough, fibrous and grey on the trunk, turning smooth grey and green above. ‘Big 0’ is highly rated for its cold hardiness. Because of its seed provenance, can handle temperatures down to -10 F.

'Big O' is a fast growing small tree that will beg to be planted as a focal point in your garden, and one of the best Eucalyptus in the shade. All grown up it could reach 20’ in height with an equal spread.  'Big O’ handles waterlogged soil, is shade tolerant, is disease and considerably heat resistant, and long-lived. Responds well to pruning so size is easy to control. With all these attributes, it's no wonder this variety is a favorite.

USDA Hardiness Zones & Details: 6b-11 (please see details below)

In Atlanta, Georgia, 10 month old trees had minimal leaf damage and looked great after a brutal winter (2013/14) where temps reached 6 degrees.  In Western, NC, 10 month old trees - that froze to the ground at -10 degrees - are growing vigorously from their base.

Sun: Full to Mostly Sun
Soil: Rich, well-drained, slightly acidic (5.5 to 6.5 pH)

Better than the big box stores

I have never bought a plant that was in such excellent condition. When I open my box for the first time seeing my plant it didn't even look real so I had to touch it to see if my eyes was playing tricks on me but the funny part about what I am saying is I have 20/20 vision. Yes it did cost a little extra but was so worth every penny.

Fragrant Beautiful Heat Tolerant Tree

Ordered 3 x 3 gallon from Gardener Direct and they all arrived perfectly packed with no issues at all. The first thing you will notice when you open the box is the AMAZING Eucalyptus fragrance which is probably why most of you are looking at buying this tree in the first place. These trees are also very fast growing and having ordered and planted in mid-late spring they have already added 8 inches each! As a fast growing tree remember to give it a strong start by training the central leader if you wish to get this plant into the classic "tree" shape or if you like you can keep it as more of a large shrub by allowing the lower branches to continue to grow. Tree seems to thrive in full sun but will take part shade as well. I have 2 planted in full shade and one that only gets about 3 hours of sun and they are all doing well! This tree really holds up to heavy summer heat as well so you don't have to worry if you are in a very hot climate these trees don't seem to bake! Just be sure to get them plenty of water to get them established. They are sensitive to dogs so if you have dogs that are prone to running around the yard marking their territory then be sure to setup some wire cages around the young trees so they can get started without the dog urine burning their new growth. As the tree gets older and the bark matures it is much more resistant to dogs and the cages can be removed after a few years. Big O' also does not get huge and does not have a very shallow expansive root system. It is a great tree to plant in a tight corner or to shade an HVAC unit for more efficient use. (shaded HVAC outdoor units can use as much as 10% less electricity compared to units sitting in full summer sun). They also tend to be evergreen and not drop many leaves if you are in a warmer climate that does not get too far below 20 degrees in the winters. They also will drop leaves if they are in a drought state so this can be helpful for a good indicator that you are not getting your Eucalyptus enough water! A great compact tree that grows relatively fast with a great fragrance! Good for foundation planting near the entrance to your home for a great scent to come home to, also plant alone your driveway to enjoy the scent as you come home from work! A+ service from Gardener Direct with fantastic pricing as well as amazing shipping! The shipping is worth the money as I have ordered from many online nurseries and hands down the Big O's were received in perfect shape!

I was so excited to get this very fragrant tree. The top was wilted when I received it. I planted it almost immediately with an approaching storm. It had actually started to sprinkle rain as I was finishing up my planting so it received a good watering to begin with, in addition to the watering I gave it. I watered it and babied it regularly however it was dead within a week. Very disappointed.

NOT WHAT I ORDERED.
