More about Mushroom Cryptomeria...

Noteworthy Characteristics

Cryptomeria japonica ‘Mushroom’ is a unique dwarf mounding selection of Japanese cedar with very soft-textured light green foliage during spring and summer that turns a dramatic russet color with mahogany highlights (some say purple-brown) in winter. It is a slow-growing evergreen shrub with a typical growth rate of 2 to 3 inches per year, resulting in a mushroom-shaped specimen 2 feet tall and 3 feet wide or more wide after 10 years in the garden. Does best when protected from dessicating winds. A great conifer for smaller gardens!

Although this cultivar is believed to have been of Japanese origin, this claim has yet to be verified. It is believed to have been introduced to the nursery trade by a nursery in Australia.

Uses

Useful as a specimen or in groupings in shrub borders, conifer gardens, rock gardens, Xeriscape gardens, low hedges, home foundation plantings, slopes and embankments, container gardens and asian theme gardens.

Culture & Care Tips

Prefers well-drained soils in full sun or part shade. Does best when protected from dessicating winds. Provide enough water during the first year to keep soil moist but not constantly soggy. When established this is a drought tolerant.
