More about Fragrant Winter Honeysuckle...

Noteworthy Characteristics

Winter Honeysuckle is a hard-to-find plant...and it's a bush not a vine! But its not just any bush. It produces an abundance of extremely fragrant lemony-scented, short-tubed, creamy white flowers that are a harbinger to spring; appearing during late winter before the leaves emerge and continuing for several weeks, when not much else is blooming save for Edgworthia, Winter Daphne and maybe some Cameliia japonica varieties.

The flowers are followed by small, somewhat inconspicuous, red berries which mature in late spring to early summer. Oval, dark green foliage on slender arching stems has bluish tinge. The leaves are nearly evergreen in the South, but deciduous in cooler climes. Budded branches may be cut for an early, fragrant, indoor arrangement.

It is a somewhat stiff-branched, deciduous shrub with a bushy, spreading habit, typically growing 6-10' tall and as wide when left to grow naturally, however can be pruned to control size.

Uses

Single specimen, groupings, flowering shrub borders, shrub borders, natural hedge, clipped formal hedge, visual screen or wind and noise buffer, mass plantings, home foundation plantings, and cottage gardens.

Culture & Care Tips

Easily grown in average, dry to medium, well-drained soil. Adapts to wide range of soils, including dry ones, but prefers moist, loamy soils. Can be grown in full sun to part shade.
