More about the Early Amethyst American Beautyberry...‘Early Amethyst’ Beautyberry produces abundant clusters of small, lavender-pink flowers in the leaf axils along the stems in summer, which are then followed by large clusters of bright, glossy, pearl-like, amethyst-purple fruits (each 1/8” diameter) which ripen in late summer and put on their best show through October. Fruits ripen earlier on this cultivar than with species plants, hence the cultivar name. The fruits are attractive to birds. Easy to grow, great for housing and feeding birds in winter, excellent for cutting to add to fall floral displays, Callicarpa is a must-have plant!
Uses
The profuse clusters create a colorful eye-catching display similar to the way forsythia stands out in early spring as a specimen plant. Because the ripe berries turn bright purple or white, Wilson Bros Landscape often uses them as late summer and fall highlights or focal points in a naturalized or wildlife garden. That being said, Beautyberry does well in mass plantings and can be useful as natural hedges, but allow ample room for the generally large and sprawling plants.
Culture & Care Tips
Beautyberries are long-lived shrubs that grow at a moderate to rapid rate depending on the species and growing conditions. The ideal soil is fertile, loose and well drained, although beautyberry will tolerate most soil conditions. Plants grow naturally in light to moderate shade, but can be planted in full sun for maximum flowering and berry production when adequate moisture is available.
