More about 'Navaho' Thornless Blackberry...
A 1989, University of Arkansas release (U.S. Plant Patent 6679), Navaho is a hardy, heavy, mid-season producer of very firm, flavorful berries on semi-erect, thornless canes. Many berry connoisseurs consider Navaho to be the best tasting of all the Arkansas thornless blackberries, and together with having the longest ripening period (5-6 weeks) of all the Arkansas varieties, Navaho is very hard to beat! Its large (up to 1" in length), deep blue to black, shiny fruit can easily be harvested in the home garden because no trellises are needed for support (although a vigorous, mature Navaho bush can yield 12-15 pounds of blackberries in a season, and may benefit from some support). Its noted firmness and high Soluble-Sugar content (11-12%) also contributes to Navaho having among the best post-harvest potential of any blackberry variety tested. Navaho is delicious and at its best when eaten fresh - but, it is also excellent for all kinds of desserts - pies, cobblers, jellies, and jams!
Navaho is a sun-loving, self-pollinating floricane, and it has demonstrated good resistance to Double Bloom - Rosette (DB-R) disease. It is very easy to grow, and it is an overall terrific garden performer!
Navaho requires 800-900 chill hours to attain its maximum level of fruiting productivity (please see chart/map below).
