More about Butterflies Magnolia...

Noteworthy Characteristics

Considered one of the finest of all yellow-flowered Magnolias, 'Butterflies' is certain to become a classic and deserves a spot in every landscape where it will grow (Zones 4a-9b)! Abundant 4- to 5-inch, rich yellow double flowers, each with 10 to 15 petals, are produced in abundance before new leaves emerge in spring. The flowers are held upright like butterflies alighting on branches, hence the name. The flowers have a slightly twisted form that is lovely, really resembling the butterflies for which they are named! They arise in very late spring, which protects them from frosts in cool-spring climates.

Butterflies magnolia grows in neat, pyramidal form to about 16 feet tall and 10 feet wide in 14 years, eventually reaching 25 to 35 feet tall and 10 to 15 feet wide. Exceptionally hardy, it withstands temperatures to -29 F without injury.

Uses

Most useful as a single specimen.

Culture

Plant Butterflies Magnolia in a well-drained but consistently moist, acidic, organically enriched soil and where it will receive full sun to partial shade.
