More about the Fragrant Tea Olive...

    Noteworthy Characteristics

The Fragrant Tea Olive, Osmanthus fragrans, also known as the Sweet Olive, is a large evergreen shrub or small tree that produces copious amounts of the most wonderfully fragrant flowers in existence. The flowers are tiny but boy do they pack a punch! All it takes is one Tea Olive to fill the front or backyard with a heavenly scent of perfume. The scent is really indescribable. No other fragrant plant we know of smells like the Tea Olive. It's just one of those things you have to experience for yourself. The flowers are produced in both spring and fall, whenever the nightime temperatures are between about 40 to 60 degrees. In our gardens here in mid-Georgia, this means about 2 to 4 months out of the year, depending on how the weather goes.

    Uses

A breeze will carry the aroma a good distance, but we suggest planting your Tea Olive near windows and outdoor living areas. This way you can enjoy the fragrance from close up. Tea Olives can be useful as a single specimen shrub or small tree, in groupings, in flowering shrub borders, as a natural hedge, visual screen or wind and noise buffer, to frame corners in home foundation plantings,or in fragrance or cottage gardens

    Culture & Care Tips

The Tea Olive is an exceptionally easy plant to grow in most any average well-drained soil. It prefers full sun but will tolerate a little shade. Once established it is quite drought tolerant. It has very few if any insect or disease problems and deer don't touch it!

The plants arrived today and I planted them all. This was my first time buying vegetation off the internet and I was worried about shipping damage, etc., but I have to say that I was blown away by your packing job. The plants were high quality, the soil was moist, etc…couldn’t be more pleased. Here’s hoping they survive their first winter in Seattle. We had our first bloom already and the smell is incredible. I recommend, both, the plant and Gardener Direct.

Hi Erich - Thanks so much for taking the time to provide your review! We're very happy to hear that you were happy with the plants and the packaging. Being that Seattle is in USDA Zone 8A (low temp of 10-15 degreesF), which is the same zone we're in, the tea olive should do fine. You're weather is probably a little cooler than ours throughout the year so you might get an even longer bloom season. Here in Georgia the fragrant tea olive blooms heavy in fall, sporadically through winter, and heavy again in spring. Let us know of there's ever anything else we can help you with. We're at your service!

Hi Rachel - Thanks so much for taking the time to provide us and visitors to Gardener Direct with your review. We are happy to hear that you were pleased with the Tea Olive plants and the speed in which they arrived. The Tea Olives in our gardens are blooming heavier than ever right now (October 2014) and the aroma is filling up the entire gardens. We have several that we've "limbed up" into small, evergreen trees and others used as a hedge. Let us know if there's ever anything else we can help you with. We're at your service!

Item was shipped the day after the order, received 2 days later in the sturdiest packing job I've seen. Granted the tea olives are supposed to be easy to grow, still, my plant was dropped into a planting pot, started growing new leafs literally the next day. Now I'm waiting for the flower buds.

Excellent large plant, very healthy. I am trying to find care information on the net for indoor care, but am not having a lot of luck. Again any suggestions on care is appreciated. I look forward to doing more business with you in the future.

We had a pretty harsh winter this year. It was probably the harshest one in well over ten years. I had a number of trees not survive, but this one made it through with no damage. I'm going to be training it as an espalier and it is just getting to the point where I can start tieing it off to the horizontal cables.
