Additional Information About Carex buchananii - Red Rooster Leather Leaf Sedge

Carex Buchananii 'Red Rooster' is a moderate growing ornamental grass and perennial plant that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 7A through 9B. It matures to an average height of 1 foot to 2 feet and an average width of 1 foot to 2 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides full sun, morning sun with afternoon shade or morning shade with afternoon sun and grows best when planted in sand, loam, clay or silt soil that is well drained or moderately drained. The foliage is bronze in color. It attracts visual attention and is resistant to deer, insects, diseases and heat.

Red Rooster Carex can be useful in the landscape in mass plantings, in containers or planters, in hanging baskets, in landscape beds or islands, for erosion control or in small groupings and also in theme gardens or perennial gardens.

More About Red Rooster Sedge...

Red Rooster Leather Leaf Sedge is an outstanding ornamental grass highly prized for its attractive, narrow, coppery blades and graceful habit. Tufted and erect in growth, the plants start out tight and vertical eventually growing into a vase shaped clump with an upright arching form. The tips of the thin linear leaves curl as they mature. Growing to a height of about 24 inches with an equal spread, the triangluar blades flex gracefully in the breeze.

Red Rooster is useful as an accent, border, or planted in mass as a groundcover. It is outstanding when combined with silver foliaged plants or those with brightly colored flowers. It also lends itself well as a stand alone or grassy accent in container gardens. It can also be planted in consistently moist soils at the margins of a garden pond or other bodies of water and works equally as well in the rock garden where it comdines nicely with boulders.

Red Rooster is easy to grow. It's tolerant of almost any soil type, tolerating dryness, salt winds and sandy drought-prone soils and yet will adapt to quite boggy conditions. It is disease, insect and pest resistant, including deer.

Red Rooster is exceptionally low maintence. Plants can be teased or cut back in late winter to remove dead or damaged blades.
