Additional Information About Compact Cherry Laurel

Compact Cherry Laurel is a moderate growing shrub and tree that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 8A through 10B. It matures to an average height of 8 feet to 10 feet and an average width of 6 feet to 8 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides full sun, morning sun with afternoon shade or morning shade with afternoon sun and grows best when planted in sand, loam, clay or silt soil that is well drained or moderately drained. In the winter Compact Cherry Laurel produces white flowers. The foliage is light green and medium green in color. It attracts butterflies and hummingbirds and is resistant to deer, drought and heat.

Compact Cherry Laurel can be useful in the landscape as a buffer or screen, as a border or edger, as a background, to accentuate entryways or as a hedge and also in butterfly gardens or hummingbird gardens.

Noteworthy Characteristics

'Chestnut Hill' is a new laurel cultivar similar to 'Otto Luyken' but with a more compact size (4' x 4') and superior resistance to Coryneum blight, which is commonly called "shot hole" or "shot gun" disease, due the foliage becoming riddled with small holes, as if the shrub had been blasted with bird shot from a shotgun. With a moderate growth habit, Chesnut Hill forms a compact mounding plant with dense, glossy, very dark green foliage. Loads of white, erect, bottlebrush-shaped flower spikes nearly cover the foliage in spring.  Asexual propagation of this plant is prohibited.

Uses

This evergreen shrub is great as a foundation plant as well as for natural or clipped formal hedging or mass planting. Can also be useful in flowering shrub borders, or in mass as erosion control on slopes and embankments.

Culture & Care Tips

Plant in well-drained, moist soils in full to part sun. Some afternoon shade will be appreciated in the Southeast. Withstands heavy pruning to maintain desired size or as a low hedge.
