Additional Information About Nude Sheath Bamboo

Nude Sheath Bamboo is a fast growing tree that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 5A through 11. It matures to an average height of 12 feet to 30 feet and an average width of 6 inches to 1 foot, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides full sun, morning sun with afternoon shade or morning shade with afternoon sun and grows best when planted in loam, clay or silt soil that is well drained. The foliage is dark green in color. It attracts wildlife and is resistant to heat.

Nude Sheath Bamboo can be useful in the landscape along woodland borders, in mass plantings, as a buffer or screen, in containers or planters, as a background, in landscape beds or islands or as a hedge and also in theme gardens or shade gardens.

Description

Nude Sheath is a bamboo for all of you that live where it is really cold. The roots can survive to -20 F when established and mulched well. It has very dark green erect canes with the powdery white nodal ring present on new growth. The new shoots are edible. The culm (cane) sheath is gray/wine colored with no auricles or oral setae. We have reports of this species doing great in Zone 4 of Idaho with average heghts of 12 to 18 feet. At the Denver Zoo in Zone 5, after over 12 years nuda has sized out at an average of 10 feet in height by .50 inch diameter canes. It will remain evergreen in Zone 5 after establishment of the rhizome system.

Nude Sheath is a running bamboo, which means it spreads. Bamboo can be easily controlled in a small area (a normal city yard) simply by mowing or stepping on the young shoots that emerge one time a year in spring. New shoots could also be used for culinary purposes and cooked, much like asparagus. Keep in mind that running bamboo only puts up new shoots for a short time each year, and when they are "shooting", the new plants are very fragile and easy to destroy.  Root pruning, a Bamboo Root Barrier or growing plants in above- or below-ground containers are other methods to control spread.

Gardener Direct also carries Bamboo fertilizer and planting soil containing Biochar, a highly porous material that allows for long term water and nutrient holding capabilities.
