Additional Information About Incense Bamboo

Description

Incense bamboo is one of the few Phyllostachys species suited to wetland sites and is very cold hardy. This bamboo actually has air channels within the roots which allows it to adapt to wet soil sites. The culms (canes) are green, nodes are very pronounced and the canes taper. Very upright culms and often are said to produce a perfume odor within an enclosed area.  The culm sheath is short with a very triangular blade. The sheath's auricles and oral setae are absent. When the canes of this species is rubbed it gives off a slight scent of incense giving it the nick name   'Incense Bamboo.

Incense is a running bamboo, which means it spreads. Bamboo can be easily controlled in a small area (a normal city yard) simply by mowing or stepping on the young shoots that emerge one time a year in spring. New shoots could also be used for culinary purposes and cooked, much like asparagus. Keep in mind that running bamboo only puts up new shoots for a short time each year, and when they are "shooting", the new plants are very fragile and easy to destroy. Root pruning, a Bamboo Root Barrier or growing plants in above- or below-ground containers are other methods to control spread.

Gardener Direct carries Bamboo fertilizer and planting soil containing Biochar, a highly porous material that allows for long term water and nutrient holding capabilities.
