More about Edgeworthia chrysantha...

Noteworthy Characteristics

A cousin of Winter Daphne, Edgeworthia chrysantha, also known as Paper Bush, has to be one of our favorite plants in our gardens. During the warm season, the plant is adorned with long, plumeria-like leaves. The leaves drop in early winter to reveal both the wonderful bark and the large, silvery flower buds. In January, the flower buds begin opening to fragrant, golden-yellow, honeysuckle like flowers densely packed in round clusters that continue to April.

Uses

Because of its uniqueness, Edgeworthia chrysantha is most useful in shady areas of the landscape as a single, stand-alone specimen plant. It's a fine addition to the perennial shade garden. Place near windows, patios, decks, porches and other outdoor living areas where the fragrance can be enjoyed.

Culture & Care Tips

Choose a spot to plant Edgeworthia that offers some shade, preferably afternoon shade. Rich, well drained soil is a must. Provide supplemental water if leaves wilt during prolonged periods of dry weather in summer. Make sure to pick just the right spot for this plant because it does not like being transplanted once established.

We liked them but cold snap didn't

We ordered two of these and both arrived without incident (except UPS doesn't seem to know the definition of 'UP'). Unfortunately, we planted our two shrubs just before the last surprise cold spell and one doesn't appear to have made it through. The second one is definitely sending out leaves. In any case, we have found Gardener Direct to be a great place for ordering shrubs.

Reply from Gardener Direct:

Hi Ellen - Thanks for taking the time to provide us and visitors to Gardener Direct with your review. We are sad to hear that one of the Edgeworthia is not doing so well after the cold snap, but happy to hear the other is leafing out. Before giving up on the plant, scratch or nick a small spot of surface-bark off starting at the top of a branch. If the underbark is brown, not green (alive), continue to move down the branch to see if that branch has died to the ground. If you find green, prune away any dead parts of the branch above the green. This often helps to stimulate new growth. If the entire plant has died, send a picture to team@gardenerdirect.com and we'll provide you with a store credit! Let us know if there's ever anything else we can help you with. We're at your service!
