Moso is the largest temperate bamboo on earth. Its culm (cane) sheath is very dark, spotted and hairy and easy to recognize. The sheath ligules, oral setae and auricles are very large. Extremely large culms and tiny delicate leaves make this one highly collectable. We recommend this species for USDA Zones 7 and warmer, preferable in the southeast portion of the U.S. Moso is being grown in climate zone 6 with good results, but only reaches half its normal height.
There is no mistaking Moso for any other. A mature Moso grove is a spectacular site. From a distance the groves have a light, feathery look. When a grove is properly maintained, one can stroll among the large culms as if they were in a mature conifer forest. In a mature grove the foliage begins 30 to 40 feet above the base.
Moso is a running timber bamboo, which means it spreads. Bamboo can be easily controlled in a small area (a normal city yard) simply by mowing or stepping on the young shoots. Keep in mind that running bamboo only puts up new shoots for a short time each year, and when they are "shooting", the new plants are very fragile and easy to destroy. New shoots could also be used for culinary purposes and cooked, much like asparagus. Root pruning, a Bamboo Root Barrier or growing plants in above- or below-ground containers are other methods to control spread.
