About Steeplechase Arborvitae...

Scientific Name

Cupressaceae Thuja Steeple Chase

Common Name

Thuja x 'Steeplechase'

USDA Hardiness Zones

5A - 9B

Noteworthy Characteristics

'Steeplechase' is a sport of and great improvement over A. 'Green Giant'. Steeplechase has a far more dense, full habit, with foliage far more feathery and finely cut, and a tip that emerges fully leafed out instead of shooting up a bare stem to fill in over time. It also is more narrow. Steeplechase is fast growing and exceptionally tolerant to heat, humidity, drought, cold, and heavy ice and snow. It even resists bagworms. Its neat, maintenance-free pyramidal shape never needs trimming, and its billowy, feathery look and lean habit make Steeplechase the perfect evergreen tree for a screen planting.

Uses

Steeple Chase Arborvitae is a fast growing tree that can be grown in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 5A through 5A. It matures to an average height of 20 feet to 30 feet and an average width of 4 feet to 6 feet, depending on climate and other environmental factors. It prefers growing in a location that provides full sun and grows best when planted in sand soil that is well drained. The foliage is medium green in color. If you like fragrance, Steeple Chase Arborvitae has fragrant foliage. Single Specimen, Groups, Hedges & Screens, Street Tree, Provides Shade, Foundation Plantings

Culture

Steeplechase Arborvitae prefers full sun to light shade and a moist well drained soil of average fertility but is exceptionally drought tolerant after the first couple season when established. After that there's no maintenance. Be careful not to plant this tall grower under power lines!

They, all three are fine. However, the packaging was not done real well, the trees were cramped, crammed into a too small a box so they arrived bent over. They still are after over a week of freedom. They'll be fine though.

Smallish trees were crammed into too small of a shipping container. I'm only one state away so thankfully it was a short trip. Don't know how they would've fared on a longer journey. You need better support packaging instead of wadded newspaper. On the up-side, plants appeared healthy and are adapting well. One is bent over because of the shipping but hopefully it will straighten up once it is established.
