Noteworthy Characteristics

Released by the U.S. National Arboretum, 'Munchkin' is a handsome dwarf cultivar featuring  6-inch long flower clusters that start out white and fade to pink as they age. Another outstanding feature is the handsome dark green foliage which turns mahogany in fall. The plant is considerably smaller than other dwarfs on the market, including both ‘Pee Wee’ and ‘Sikes Dwarf’. (‘Munchkin’ is a seedling of ‘Sikes Dwarf’.) The Arboretum reports that plants are 3 feet tall and spread to 4.5 feet at 9 years of age.

Uses

The smaller size of 'Munchkin' lends well to mass plantings, low hedges, mixed flowering shrub borders and even large containers. Since they’re wider than they are tall they can also be massed as a groundcover!

Culture & Care Tips

Exceptionally easy to grow, plant Munckhin in well-drained but moist, somewhat fertile soils. Constantly wet or soggy soil can cause problems with the roots. Full sun is tolerated in zones further north (5-6), however provide some afternoon shade in hotter regions of the South (zones 7-8).
