Leatherleaf Grapeberry Mahonia
Mahonia bealei

Leatherleaf Mahonia is a very attractive shade-loving, evergreen shrub producing dense clusters of very fragrant yellow flowers that turn into grape-size bluish-purple berries resembling grapes. The showy blossoms are nestled atop the foliage in late winter and early spring. The foliage is horizontally layered on vertical stems. The uniquely-shaped, large, dark green, leathery leaves contrast nicely with most any other plant in the garden. The fruits are relished by many different birds.

Leatherleaf Mahonia is often used as a border or foundation plant, but can also be used as an accent, background, natural hedge or free standing specimen in landscape beds and the perennial shade garden. Can also be grown in containers or as a large houseplant.
