Calisto Indian Hawthorne
Raphiolepis indica 'Sodark'

Calisto is the lowest growing, most compact Indian Hawthorne we know of, growing to only 3 feet in height with a spread of about 4 feet. The foliage is the deepest green of the Indian Hawthornes and the deep green leaves are wavy instead of flat. It produces an abundance of vibrant pink flowers in spring that contrast nicely with the dark foliage. It is an exceptionally low-maintenance, drought and heat tolerant evergreen shrub that requires very well-drained soil. The dense, low and mounding form, and the hardiness, makes this shrub a perfect selection for foundation plantings or in sunny to partially shaded landscape beds and islands. Useful as a hedge or border, in small groups, or planted in mass. Works well on slopes and embankments to control erosion and stays low enough to use as an underplanting for small to mid-size trees. Very easy to grow in most types of soil provided they are well-drained. This plant does not like consistently wet soil.
